ScreenToast / Features / Vertical screen recording
Vertical screen recording on a Mac, without the crop.
Your Mac screen is wide; TikTok, Reels and Shorts are tall. Cropping a wide recording down to 9:16 throws most of the picture away. ScreenToast lets you record an area locked to 9:16 from the start, so what you film is exactly what you post — and the editor opens already set up for vertical.
Record and edit free, no sign-in. Pro from $4.92/month when you export.
How to record vertical video on a Mac
- Open ScreenToast and choose Area. Your screen dims and you drag out the part you want to record.
- Press 3 for 9:16. The box snaps to vertical and holds that shape however you drag or resize it. It can't wander off the edge of your screen.
- Frame the part of the app that matters — a sidebar, a phone-sized window, the panel you're demonstrating.
- Record. When you stop, the editor opens on a 1080 × 1920 canvas with the vertical export preset already chosen.
- Export for TikTok, Reels or Shorts. It saves straight to your Mac.
Six shapes, one key each
Press a number while you drag to switch shape without letting go of the mouse:
| Key | Shape | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Free | Any rectangle you like |
| 2 | 16:9 | YouTube, Product Hunt, your website |
| 3 | 9:16 | TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts |
| 4 | 1:1 | X and LinkedIn feeds |
| 5 | 4:5 | Instagram and LinkedIn portrait posts |
| 6 | 4:3 | Slides and docs |
Already recorded wide? Re-frame it
If you recorded your whole display, you can still export vertical. ScreenToast re-frames the picture instead of chopping the sides off: the crop follows the action, so the thing you're demonstrating stays in shot. Recording vertical from the start is still sharper, because nothing is thrown away.
Your face on top, the screen below
For vertical video, ScreenToast can stack your camera above the screen and slide the screen along to keep the action in view — a desktop recording people can actually read on a phone. You can move, resize or remove the camera after you've stopped recording.
Film your next Reel the right shape.
